Strategic Planning & Business Development

Corporate Background

The Strategic Planning and Business Development (‘SBD’) division of Pfizer India pro-actively addresses the unique complexities and challenges of the Indian market, while keeping in mind the strategic imperatives set by Pfizer's global leadership. SBD's goal is to bring marketing, medical, financial and technology skills together to develop new kinds and methods of business, whether organically or in alliance with complementary participants in the healthcare sector.

Strategic Planning

SBD develops the underlying strategic concepts and co-ordinates the preparation of the rolling 5-year Strategic Plan on behalf of the India leadership team.

Over the 2003 and 2004 planning cycles, SBD closely evaluated the changing economic and regulatory environment and recommended a new long-term strategic vision for Pfizer's business in India. This initiative was undertaken with the support, views and guidance of the Asia and India leadership teams. The Strategic Planning & Business Development group in New York also partnered with India in this effort. It was concluded that India should reap benefits from Pfizer's high-end product pipeline through new launches and high-science therapy shaping. These findings have been accepted and approved by the senior business leadership in New York and Hong Kong.

With the strategic understanding and thought leadership continuously being developed and refined, SBD also pro-actively articulates Pfizer India's perspective to the senior management of Pharmaceuticals, R&D, Animal Health and Information Technology about business opportunities and issues in India.

Current projects include new thinking about redefining Pfizer India as a Healthcare company.

Business Development

SBD cultivates selective relationships with complementary players, providers and payors with a view to develop strategic alliances or deals that strengthen Pfizer's business.

A significant milestone was achieved through the forging of a local co-promotion agreement with Sanofi-Synthelabo for Daxid (Sertraline). The strategic intent behind the deal is to speed up the growth of Daxid sales in India through Sanofi's access to specialists, even as Pfizer prepares to strengthen its own capabilities in this therapeutic segment.

Previously, a major transaction undertaken was the divestment of the $ 5 million Protinex brand to Danish company EAC, which provided a strong boost to non-operational income in 2002-2003.

Current projects involve implementation steps that will help streamline Pfizer’s business structure in line with the new strategic vision.
